The Dynavap “M” Plus is the first and only vaporiser I have ever used. It worth also mentioning, that I first tried it only about 2 months ago. That said, it quickly became my preferred method of consumption. In this post I break down why I went with DynaVap specifically. I then tell you about my experience using it, and finish off with a few tips and tricks that can help you get the most out of your DynaVap. I’ve included a couple of links where you can get your own DynaVap. We might earn a referral commission off these links, at no extra cost to you.
Let’s get into it.
If you are a person that smokes weed on a regular basis (as opposed to other methods of consumption), I’m sure that to some degree you have concerns about the negative impact it might be having on your lungs. This is what ultimately led me to investigate vaporising.
It was only after trying various other methods of consumption that I decided to look into vaporising, because I initially had some concerns about vaporising, which I outline below. If you’re interested, I write about my experience using different methods of consumption, and how I ultimately decided to give vaporising a try, in this post. Give it a read if you want to understand a bit more about the pros and cons of each method of consumption, at least from my perspective.
After some initial investigation, I decided that vaporising might be the best substitute to smoking. But there were two issues I have with how most vaporisers work: - they use processed products as opposed to the natural plant as God made it - there are typically heating elements, batteries, and other unknown materials in these devices which I’m not comfortable having in a tool that I will be inhaling from
While searching for some more natural and manual options, I came across DynaVap. Basically a medical grade stainless steel tube, that is designed to be used with the actual flower, and is simply heated using a torch lighter. It had a excellent reviews. Exactly the device I was looking for.
I found it on Zootly (great site by the way - thanks Tamía for top class service). It arrived at my doorstep within a couple of days. I pulled out my Cookies & Cream, filled up the bowl and proceeded to heat it up with my trusty Bic lighter. I finally heard the famous “click” and my entire captive cap was black by this point. I took a drag, and …disappointing!
It didn’t work. Not only didn’t it work, the Bic flame made my entire cap black with smoke. After a few attempts, I realised that this is not going to be that simple. I rolled myself a joint, and started looking online how to use this new toy. I quickly found out that for the best results I needed a torch lighter, which I didn’t have.
You’d be surprised how difficult it is to find a decent torch lighter. I ended up picking up a nice one at Shoe Care in Eastgate a couple of days later (downstairs in front of the old CNA). Same helpful gentleman behind the counter that we all remember growing up. Still an excellent shop that stocks all kinds of useful gadgets.
I got home, filled up the bowl and proceeded to follow the tips I picked up on YouTube. It worked! I couldn’t believe how well-designed this tool is. Sure, it wasn’t the perfect roast the first time, but it immediately became clear to me the potential that this device had.
Over the next couple of weeks I figured out exactly how to play around with the heat and the cap and found my preferred ways of using it. The thing about DynaVap is that because it’s totally manual, you have complete control to consume your herb exactly the way you like it. You can bang out a full bowl in one hit to get you flying, or you can put a tenth of that and lightly roast it for a more terpy experience; and anything in between. Technically, you could probably even just light the weed up and smoke it with this device, although I wouldn’t recommend trying that!
It has improved the experience significantly. No more combustion, smelly smoke and congested sinuses the next morning. The device simply works. I have not rolled another joint since, it’s just far superior grind the weed up, and vaporise it through my DynaVap. It’s quick, clean and enjoyable.
I’ll give you some points about how I use my DynaVap and some useful tricks I’ve found, and some mistakes I’ve made that have ended up in combusting the weed.
- I’ve moved the screen to the half bowl position and find that this is more than enough for me most times, and exactly right for when I want to really send it. That said, I personally don’t need a lot to get to where I want to be, and everyone’s different. So depending on your tolerance and preference, you might prefer the full bowl. But personally, I typically use about half a half bowl (you read that right, half of the half bowl), and it’s exactly right for me most of the time. Play around with different amounts to see what works for you. Of course, this is easier to dial in once you have got your heating methods nailed down so you can get a consistent experience.
- I know that the “M” Plus was designed with the heating dimples on the tip, but I find this gets too hot for my liking and I prefer to use the cap. Perhaps the dimples are more useful for a packed full bowl, but for the amounts I’m using, it seems unnecessary and creates a high risk of combustion. So after burning my weed a couple of times, I’ve stopped using that approach.
- My go to heating approach: I like to consume the bulk of what I put in the bowl on the first cycle. I place the the cap about 1 cm to 2 cm above the blue visible part of the flame. If you’re outdoors the wind affects the heat, so you typically need to hold it a bit closer to the visible blue part of the flame. I direct it towards the bottom of the cap where the letter “N” is, and hold the DynaVap at about 45 degrees with the cap up and the mouthpiece below. Rotate the DynaVap as you heat it so you get an even distribution. As soon as you hear the second click, stop and enjoy. Then, once it has cooled down below the two clicks, I heat again but this time the flame is directed towards the top of the cap where the “D” is. The oven is already warm, so I find that using this approach avoids overheating the herb and combusting it. Also, since you’ve already extracted much of the goodness, the herb is dryer now and more easily combusted, so moving the heat target “upwards” on the cap seems to be a good idea not to completely burn everything. Again, respect the clicks. Depending on how much extraction you got from the the first cycle, and how much weed you loaded, this might be the last cycle, or you might be able to do a third one, again towards the top of the cap so you don’t combust the mostly extracted weed. You should be pretty grilled after this.
- The more you use your DynaVap the more you’ll be able to get a sense of how toasted the weed is, either by the amount of vapour being generated or simply by the taste. If you’re not sure, I suggest opening it and looking at the colour of the weed. Make sure you let the cap cool to a reasonable temperature first though. You weed is pretty much done if it’s a brown (toasted not burnt) colour that turns into powder if you put a little in the palm of your hand and rub it with your finger. At this point all the moisture and goodness has been extracted already and continuing to squeeze anything out of it will likely lead to combustion.
- Cleaning: Unless you accidentally combusted the herb, in which case I recommend you give the DynaVap a good clean, you typically only need to clean it about once every 7-10 days. I find it works better when it’s clean, both in terms of the reliability of the heating and in terms of the taste. I basically disassemble it, put all the pieces into hot water to soak for a few minutes. Once they’re nicely soaked I start scrubbing them down with pipe cleaners and earbuds. Get rid of all excess water, leave it out to dry properly, and reassemble it. I personally don’t use any alcohol or soaps. I find that with regular cleaning, hot water works pretty well and I don’t have to worry about having any left over chemicals remaining.
So if you’re looking for a better way to “smoke” your weed, give DynaVap a try. I highly recommend it. The one I use is the “M” Plus, but I have no doubt that any of the other new devices will be just as pleasant to use (e.g. the M 7, VonG or WoodWynd). You might be reluctant to laying out the cash, but I can assure you that it’s a worthwhile investment and will probably last you years, if not generations. Just take care of the cap, it’s probably the most delicate part of this device, and the O-Rings of course. But it is not designed to break. You will get your money’s worth, undoubtedly.
Let me know how it goes if you decide to try it out. I’m very interested to learn about other people’s experience with the DynaVap and any useful tricks you have learnt.
It’s really changed the way I enjoy my weed. Give it a try!
